Before I Could Support Others, I Had to Learn to Support Myself
Nicola McCafferty The Foster Parent's Coach
My journey into fostering and the burnout that nearly broke me led me to create the kind of support I wish had existed all along.
This is my story. And if you're here, it might be yours too.
I know what it feels like to give everything you’ve got and still wonder if it’s enough.

Hi, I’m Nicola.
I’m a foster parent, an accredited coach, and someone who’s walked through the fire - and still chooses love, every single day.
My journey into fostering began when my daughter was just nine years old. She wished for siblings, and as a family, we decided to open our hearts and our home.
What began as respite care quickly became something deeper.
Over the past decade, I’ve been a solo carer for three incredible children - two of whom I’ve fostered long-term.
Together, we’ve navigated joy, trauma, growth, and grief.
And through it all, one truth became painfully clear: foster carers are often forgotten in the process.
We’re trained to care.
To manage.
To hold space.
But we’re rarely taught how to hold ourselves.
I’ve lived the exhaustion.
The guilt.
The pressure to get it right while quietly falling apart behind closed doors.
I know what it’s like to love these kids with your whole heart - and still feel like you’re failing.
And I also know: You can care for them without losing yourself.
You deserve rest. You deserve boundaries. You deserve to feel seen.
That’s why I created my signature framework, Fostering with Confidence - a space for carers like you to reconnect to your own needs, rebuild your emotional resilience, and receive the kind of support I wish I’d had all along.
Because fostering shouldn’t come at the cost of your health, your joy, or your identity.
You matter too.
